It’s a Good Thing I Bought That Davenport

Ahoy this morning to you, my readers. My grandson Max left on his business trip to California today along with C. J. When he gets to California, Max will be “guest blogging” about his travels, so we can all look forward to that. Now that C. J. is gone, Derek and Jessica (the pregnant one) are the only ones still living in my pop up trailer in the back yard. One down, two to go! (I say that in jest. I am happy to be their host until their home life improves.)

It’s a shame that Max and C. J. won’t be back in time for Tricia’s birthday party, which is this Saturday. We’ll be going out to dinner, and then taking in the movie Twilight Eclipse. Tricia confided in me that she has already seen it, but she assured me it was wonderful, warranting repeated viewings at the theatre. She’s been talking constantly about how she wants a Bettie Page corset for her birthday. I told her that that might not be the most appropriate gift for a 16 year old girl, but I’d see what I can do. She’s been such a delightful houseguest and student this summer that I’m having a hard time justifying saying no to her.

Hannah Montana, my Welsh corgi, had an accident on my mattress this morning. I knew I shouldn’t have installed those doggie steps. They turned out to be a freeway leading straight to a soiled mattress. I’m going out to buy a new mattress this afternoon, and I’m hoping I can take delivery of it today. If not, we’ll have to pull out the davenport in the great room tonight (that’s what they call living rooms nowadays). When I bought that davenport in 1972, the first Mrs. Codger wanted to buy a regular sofa, but I told her no, because you never know when you’ll need an extra bed. And I’ve slept on that davenport every time my mattress has gotten soiled ever since then. She was wrong about a lot of things over the years, but that one really takes the cake!

Until next time!

Ahoy,

The Codger

Good morning! I have my fingers crossed that you can arrange for the delivery of your mattress today. If not, I suggest placing some plywood, or a couple of pieces of paneling, (anything but that Chinese flake particle board) underneath the mattress of your davenport. That way, you won’t injure your back on the steel supporting bars overnight. I sure learned that one the hard way, yes sir, let me tell you!
Also, it might not be my place to say this, but if that Derek were a gentleman, and not a dog, he would offer to switch beds with you for the night.
    Take it easy,

    • Good morning to you, Charlie Bros! Thank you for the helpful advice. I have some rebar and some domestic drywall out in the shed, so I should be able to craft something. Not that there’s anything wrong with my davenport’s mattress, mind you, but you can never have too much support.

I hope you won’t judge young Derek too harshly. I don’t remember if I’ve told you about this or not, but he was in the Army until they downsized on account of the bad economy. The poor kid. I wouldn’t feel right kicking him out of my pop up trailer after he already got kicked out of the Army, even if it was just to sleep on the mattress for a night.

  2. You be careful on that davenport.

According to the 2006 edition of the Statistical Abstract of the United States, 135,190 of our fellow Americans went to the emergency room in 2002 because they’d injured themselves on a sofa, couch or davenport.

Yes, it specifically mentions davenports, and, no, I’m not making this up.

    • Greetings, Mr. Pack. Those are some disturbing statistics. But I’ve had my davenport for 38 years and haven’t had a single injury, so I would imagine that report includes some of the newer, more shoddily-made models. Irregardless, I’ll be sure to use caution.

      Kind regards,

additionally, as a youngster, i appreciate the promptness & consistency w/ which you respond to comments on your blog. i feel exceedingly connected when my phone ( a black berry ) jangles in kind.

btw (by the way), “irregardless” is a silly word. you should just write “regardless.”

      sincerely yours,

      • Dear Brory, Thank you for your approval of my blogging habits. Not many people appreciate consistency and promptness these days, you know. As for my corgi, my 6 year old granddaughter Fiona picked out her name. I liked it because it rhymed, but I did not find out until later that Hannah Montana was also the name of Fiona’s favorite actress. But by that point I had filed all the registration paperwork, so that was that. I eventually watched (the TV actress) Hannah Montana’s program with Fiona when she was visiting my house one afternoon, but I can’t say that I greatly enjoyed it.

        Enjoy your Black Berry!

  4. Doggie steps to the mattress? How kind! Your animal obviously felt soooooo comfortable, that is sort of leaked. By accident, of course.

    • Good evening, Thetownecrier. Yes, it’s true, my Hannah Montana will never want for comfort, and I am sure that she did not soil my mattress deliberately. In a way, she did my a favor, as my new mattress is a superior model.

      Best wishes,
